Ants Walking In Tornado Pattern
|
This was captured on the road at Panthanal, Brazil. The ants were moving in a circular motion similar to that of a tornado. I wonder what made the ants move like that. |

I posted about this on my message board: http://p211.ezboard.com/fantfarmfrm7.showMessage?topicID=1613.topic … Hopefully one of the ant experts can answer this.

Ants follow the chemical scent of leading ants: linearly. To cross a stream ants form a sphere to float across, sacrificing many toward the outside of the lump or sphere, to protect the inside queen and eggs.
There was likely a scent trail until the road where the trail became distorted due to traffic, making the linear scent trail perpendicular. Their spherical idea then likely kicked-in to cross the road. Since there was no drowning concern, they could assemble and move circularly then as a disc, rather than spherically.
Or, jokingly, you just witnessed them invent the wheel. But seriously, before they do that we need to preach the Lord to every living creature.
Cool movie. Thanks.
